“You’ll Cry with Laughter” The Daily Mail
When her best friend Annie loses her husband to cancer, Northerner Chris cooks up a scheme to memorialize him in an unusual way. The two friends and their fellow WIs decide to make a “nude” “not naked” calendar to raise money for the hospital where he died, specifically to replace the old waiting room settee. However, the calendar becomes a global phenomenon, and the success soon drives a wedge between the two women's friendship. Will their friendship survive? Will they finally get their settee? Will the WI give their approval? Based on a real-life event, Calendar Girls brilliantly balances the poignant stories of several women told with bucket loads of quirky northern humour, as it hilariously follows the calendar's inception & execution, into the media explosion that followed, and subsequent consequences of instant fame. Ultimately, it is an uplifting tale of friendship, loyalty, camaraderie and love in all their glorious guises.
