Little Voice lives alone with her over-powering mother. Painfully shy, she finds expression in impersonations of famous singers. A sleazy talent scout overhears her and tries to drag her into the spotlight and make her a star. The rush for success almost breaks her but later, however, she learns to sing in her own voice. Little Voice premiered at the National Theatre in 1992 and won the Olivier for Best Comedy and the Evening Standard Award for Best New Comedy. The play was later made into a film starring Michael Caine, Brenda Blethyn (who was nominated for an Oscar) and Jane Horrocks.
